We went there to fish, but ended up taking pics instead. The wildflowers were magnificent, the fishing wasn’t.

And a self portrait of sorts…

My son and I spent some time at the Metolius River’s Wizard Falls fish hatchery on Sunday afternoon. The river offered a cool break from the otherwise warm temperatures that we have been experiencing.
While we were enjoying tossing nuggets to the big fish in the hatchery pond, we discovered this small bird escorting her young from a brushy area next to the water. We decided to sit still and quiet in order to watch what the mother bird surely felt was a life threatening endeavor.
It was very interesting to experience this small bird (momma was about 4 inches tall) move her little ones (maybe 1 ½ inches tall) away from the pond and into the likely safer old growth ponderosa forest.
Trying not to interrupt their activities, we tried to get some images. We listened to them chatter and complain about our presence, but did our best to let them do their thing. These are very fast and cunning birds. I managed to get a few images of them as they made their move.

At first they appeared to me as small Killdeer, but I don’t believe that is accurate. I’m sure I could find out their identity on my own, but I was wondering if anyone could help me out.
Have any of you ever witnessed this sort of event? If so, I would love it if you would share your experience!
