Senior Photos, Jamie Style

September 20th, 2009

I’m a bit new to the senior photo scene. Todays shoot went great. Joe had scoped out locations for me, and Jamie was a willing model.

Here’s a couple of shots from the day…

I’ve posted more of them here, if you are interested.

Casting call

September 18th, 2009

“Orvis National Casting Competition set for this weekend in Bend.”

Being an avid fly fisherman, when I saw this headline in the Bend Bulletin yesterday, I was a little, well…

Curious.

I am all for a bit of spur of the moment competition among friends when it comes to fly fishing. Heck, it seems like I spot half the rising trout that Jon catches whenever we are out together (he catches them when I can’t). But an official competition is just not my style. I don’t have anything against it. It looked like everyone was having a great time. Good for them. It was nice to see Dennis and Vivian at the event (especially Vivian, as she is going to help set me up with some flowers for my dirt garden). There was a lot of talk about conservation, ecosystem repairs, and volunteering.

The real reason I decided to go ahead and stop by was two-fold. First, curiosity. Second, entertainment. A co-workers wife plays in a local bluegrass band named “Bend’n Strings.” I have been trying to make it to one of their shows for a while, and I thought this would be the perfect union of my two hobbies.

With all of the social activities going on in of all things the Orvis building in Bend’s Old Mill District, I can’t believe that my anti-social self even attended. But, I’m glad I did. I got to listen to some great music along with getting a few chuckles from the “Whor-vis” crowd.

Here’s a pic from the evening.

Clueless Gardener in Central Oregon.

September 16th, 2009

Ok, I admit it. I don’t know how to take care of my garden. I have lived in a place that hasn’t required any garden maintenance for the last 7-8 years. Now I live in a neighborhood that is full of green grass, numerous flowers, and wonderful gardens.

My house is the odd place on the block. Fulla dirt, it is. Desert style dirt. Dry and nutrient deficient. It’s Dusty.

I know it’s late to try and get a start right now, but I want to have some color come spring. Then I want to have something at least worthwhile next summer.

Bulbs? When should I plant them?

I am so clueless. Please help.

Halfway to 90

September 14th, 2009

My 45th birthday was on Sunday. My friends and I joke that “45 is the new 29”, but it really does feel that way. I still feel like I am in my 20’s.

My son and I spent the weekend visiting Crater Lake with my parents in their RV. We hit all of the tourist spots and took a lot of the same photos that have been taken a million times over. Braden and I were able to take a few minutes out of the day so that he could make this 10 frame composite panorama of the view from the West Rim.

We saw the sights, visited the shops, almost drove off a cliff, and then headed back towards our camp sight. We started to settle in, but I just knew that there would be good light on Mt. Thielsen during the late afternoon. B and I took a break and headed over to scope out the view of Thielsen from the other side of the lake. There were some cool clouds, but with the rains coming it just didn’t look too promising.

So we headed back to the camp for dinner. I was antsy during this time as I just had this feeling that the light would come. I kind of shortened the dinner break due to the persistent thoughts that I should be “over there right now”. My dad joined me for an unfortunately disappointing sunset.

We headed back to the RV and put in a movie (roughing it, ya know). Then, just as we started to meld into our seats it came. A very active storm crossed over us. Man! I should be “over there!!!” It was very intense for about an hour. I probably could have got some good shots from the other side, but I was okay just hanging out where we were and enjoying the show.
