The Seventh Annual Burning of the Pram

Every October, a bunch of eclectic and free-spirited friends take a weekend to get together and share some time along the banks of the beautiful Yakima River in Eastern Washington. I am happy to say that I was able to take part in the event for my 5th time. It’s something that I always look forward to, but can’t seem to explain. Funny, it really doesn’t need an explanation, but a fellow “BP’er” and friend Skip Enge describes it like this:

“What is BP?

Food, fly fishing, family and Fire!

The food this year…Dammm! The pig roast, the BBQ sauce spiked with Unfrozen’s Holy Sheet and some of my peppers, Nope’s polenta “Hors D’oeuvres”, Pauls great perennial Thai soup, our newbie Cannook’s (dammit forgot yer name my gardening friend) wonderful salmon, Jay’s BBQ steelhead, Steve’s killer BBQ sauced chicken wings, Karl’s dry rub wings were really great too, Grandma Gamby’s fried chicken, Eric’s wife’s muffins were my road food home, those great little crispy corn bread crisps with goat cheese, the sausage and kraut-2 kinds and both killer! Multiple chili dishes, that absolutely great slaw I had with the pig roast, there’s nothing like a good slaw…Stimmy’s great little breakfast of eggs and home made sausage for anyone that’s hungry…next year I’m bringing 4 dozen eggs to share! And there is always a coffee pot for that chilly morning first cup…many other culinary offerings were generously offered and devoured…other items of generosity were shared, stickers for my rig, furled leaders, flies, advice, yarns, laughs I accepted with great appreciation…

The Friday night BS session around the Gamby Chateau fire…Dammm, I haven’t laughed that much in a long, long time…I hope Tanner isn’t psychologically scarred …but that young man had a he11 of a weekend…Eric gave Tanner his 6 wt for his birthday!…a 14″ and 15″ redside on top on his 15th birthday and he got to experience the Greatest Night in Fly Fishing!

I embraced the psychedelic fly “Purple Haze” which goes against my own rather conservative theories of fly selection…it was money on Friday!”

Skip Enge. Artist, Gardener, and fellow Fly Fisherman.

Of course I made a lot of images, here a few of my favorites…

If you aren’t familiar with the event; think flyfishing, food, friends, and fire.

Definitely the greatest night in flyfishing..

The Colors, They Are a ’Changin’

October 18th, 2009

Just a week or so ago there was snow on the ground. Then we got rain, freezing rain, and ice.

This weekend proved to be classic fall in the high desert. I bit of chill in the air, and blue skies above. It was a great to be outside.

Saturday, Braden and I decided to go for a drive to see the wonders that were happening outside. We cruised through downtown, Drake Park, Pioneer Park, and Farewell Bend Park before deciding to head towards the mountains. We quickly noticed that there were some ominous clouds coming over the summit so we made a left turn in order to check out some areas of the Deschutes River above town.

We made a good choice.

Braden skipped some rocks across the river while I played with the camera. He got one to skip 5 times across the rough water. I only got one to go 4.

The locals weren’t too thrilled.

On Sunday we went to Cat6. It’s a video game players dream. We spent an hour there flying fighter jets on team flights into unbelievable territories. I’m not a video game fan, but this place was cool. Leather seats, flat screens, and the opportunity to have an hour of fun with my son. He kicked my butt but I don’t care. He was happy to spend yesterday with me making images while hiking along the river, so I didn’t mind playing his game for a bit. The Pizza Mondo dinner at a warm table on the streets of downtown Bend topped it off.

Not to mention a couple of hours laughing together while watching The Holy Grail.

What a grand weekend!

Finally!

I had pretty much given up on getting any fresh peppers from my jalapeno plant this year. Heck, due to my lack of a green thumb, I’m surprised it’s still alive. While doing some chores tonight I noticed that its actually starting to produce!

Will wonders never cease?
